Why We’re All Sheep Who Need a Shepherd

The Shepherd’s Job: Protection and Provision

Psalm 23:1 declares, “The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing.” This simple statement reveals profound truth about our relationship with God. When David calls God his shepherd, he’s acknowledging both God’s role and his own identity. If God is the shepherd, that makes us the sheep.

At Lakeview Christian Church, we embrace this biblical truth as central to our mission: be the change as Jesus has changed us through “Just 3” – Study to love and know God, Share to know and love others, and Serve as love in action. Understanding our identity as sheep helps us appreciate our desperate need for the Good Shepherd.

The Uncomfortable Truth About Sheep

Here’s the reality we must accept: sheep are, frankly, big, dumb animals. And so are we. Before you’re offended, consider the parallels:

Sheep don’t know what they need. They’ll graze an area to nothing, endangering themselves through their own appetites. The shepherd must constantly scout ahead, knowing when to move the flock to green pastures.

Sheep follow blindly. In 2005 in Turkey, 1,500 sheep followed one sheep off a cliff. The first 400 died; the rest survived by landing on the unfortunate cushion below. Sheep lack discernment about danger.

Sheep get stuck easily. They’ll drown in shallow water they could simply stand up in. They’ll get their heads trapped in gates, get freed, then immediately stick their heads back in the same spot.

Sheep consume poison. They’ll eat toxic weeds that kill them, unable to distinguish nourishment from poison.

Sound uncomfortably familiar? Isaiah 53:6 confirms: “We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way.”

What It Means to Go Astray

When Scripture says we’ve “gone astray,” it means we’ve left the care and protection of our Shepherd who wants to provide for us, look out for us, and care for us. Just as sheep graze away from the flock and put themselves in dangerous positions, we do the same spiritually.

Going astray looks like:

  • Pursuing relationships God warned us against
  • Chasing careers that satisfy ego but starve our souls
  • Consuming entertainment that poisons our minds
  • Following cultural trends that lead away from biblical truth
  • Trusting our own wisdom over God’s Word

Proverbs 14:12 warns, “There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death.” Our natural instincts, left unchecked, lead us into danger.

The Shepherd Provides Everything We Need

Despite our tendency to wander, Psalm 23:1 contains beautiful hope: “I lack nothing.” How can David make this claim? Because a good shepherd’s job is to provide everything sheep need – not just food and water, but safety, rest, direction, and care.

Notice David doesn’t take credit: “He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside quiet waters. He refreshes my soul. He guides me along the right paths” (Psalm 23:2-3). Every good thing comes from the Shepherd, not the sheep’s own wisdom or effort.

This is why Study is essential at Lakeview Christian Church. Through loving and knowing God via His Word, we learn to recognize our Shepherd’s voice and follow His leading rather than our own faulty instincts. John 10:27 says, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.”

Recognizing Our Shepherd’s Voice

Jesus declared in John 10:11, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” Unlike hired hands who abandon sheep when danger comes, Jesus proved His commitment by dying for us. He didn’t just protect us from external threats; He rescued us from our own wayward hearts.

Through Share at Lakeview Christian Church, we know and love others by helping them recognize the Good Shepherd’s voice in a world full of competing calls. We share the truth that God isn’t distant or uncaring – He’s actively providing, protecting, and pursuing His wandering sheep.

From Wandering to Following

The transformation from straying sheep to faithful follower happens through daily surrender. We acknowledge our tendency to wander and our need for guidance. We stop trusting our own instincts and start trusting our Shepherd’s wisdom.

Psalm 23:3 says, “He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake.” Notice the motivation – God guides us not just for our benefit but for His glory. When we follow our Good Shepherd, we display His faithfulness to a watching world.

Love in Action

Serve – love in action – flows from sheep who’ve experienced their Shepherd’s care. We serve not because we’re strong and capable, but because we’ve been rescued and restored. We extend the same patience, provision, and protection we’ve received.

First Peter 2:25 beautifully summarizes our journey: “For you were like sheep going astray, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.”

Embracing Your Identity

At Lakeview Christian Church, we don’t shy away from the humbling truth that we’re all sheep who need a shepherd. This isn’t an insult – it’s an invitation to experience the provision, protection, and love of the Good Shepherd who knows exactly what we need.

Your Shepherd Is Calling

If you’ve wandered from God’s care, good news: He’s pursuing you. Luke 15:4 tells us the shepherd leaves the ninety-nine to find the one lost sheep. That’s how valuable you are to Him.

Maybe you’ve been grazing in areas God warned you about. Perhaps you’ve followed the crowd toward danger. You might be stuck in patterns you can’t break free from alone. The Good Shepherd sees you, knows exactly where you are, and is calling you back to safety.

Ezekiel 34:16 promises, “I will search for the lost and bring back the strays. I will bind up the injured and strengthen the weak.”

Stop Wandering, Start Following

The first step is acknowledging what David understood: “The LORD is my shepherd.” Not “a” shepherd, not one option among many, but my shepherd – personal, committed, and trustworthy.

The second step is admitting: “I lack nothing” when I’m under His care. Everything you’re chasing outside of God’s provision – significance, security, satisfaction, love – He already offers in abundance.

John 10:10 contrasts our choices: “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” Wandering leads to destruction; following the Good Shepherd leads to abundant life.

Join the Flock

Don’t wander alone. At Lakeview Christian Church, we’re a flock of sheep learning to recognize our Shepherd’s voice together. Through Study, we learn His Word. Through Share, we encourage one another. Through Serve, we reflect His love to others.

Romans 12:5 reminds us, “So in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.” Sheep are safer, healthier, and more fruitful in the flock than isolated and alone.

If you’ve gone astray, today is the day to return to your Shepherd. He’s been waiting, watching, and ready to welcome you back with open arms. That’s not just religious sentiment – it’s the heart of the gospel and the promise of Psalm 23.

The Good Shepherd is calling your name. Will you follow His voice?
