Reclaiming Our Attention: Treasuring God in a Distracted Age

attention

In our hyper-connected world, distraction is everywhere. The constant buzzing of phones, the endless scroll of news and social media, and the barrage of notifications are now woven into the fabric of daily life. At Lakeview Christian Church, we believe Jesus calls us to something deeper—a life where our attention is not fractured by the world, but focused on Him, so we can “be the change” as Jesus has changed us.

The Battle for Our Attention

Pastor Jim recently asked us a simple but profound question: “What’s the first thing you reach for every morning?” For many, the answer is their phone—hungry for updates, news, and connection. But he reminded us that whatever consistently captures our attention eventually shapes our affection. In other words, what we dwell on, we begin to desire. This truth is both a warning and an invitation.

Paul’s words in Romans 12:1-2 (NIV) speak directly to this dilemma:
“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

Transformation begins not with our circumstances, but with our focus. The world will always offer us new distractions, but God invites us to renew our minds and fix our hearts on Him.

Study: Knowing and Loving God

At Lakeview, our “Just 3” mission starts with Study—to love and know God. Pastor Jim pointed out that when we intentionally dwell on God’s character, promises, and mighty works, our hearts begin to treasure Him more and more. This isn’t about adding more Bible knowledge for its own sake, but about letting God’s truth permeate our thinking in the midst of life’s noise.

What does this look like practically?

  • Begin each day, not with your phone, but with prayer or a moment of Scripture. Start with Psalm 63:1:
“O God, You are my God; I shall seek You earnestly; My soul thirsts for You, my flesh yearns for You, In a dry and weary land where there is no water.”
  • Turn moments of waiting—standing in line, riding the bus, or lying awake at night—into opportunities for reflection on God’s faithfulness.
  • Memorize verses that remind you of God’s love and presence.

Share: Knowing and Loving Others

Distraction doesn’t just pull us away from God; it can keep us from meaningful relationships with others. Our mission calls us to Share—to know and love others. When our attention is shaped by God rather than the world, we become more attuned to the needs, stories, and hurts of those around us.

  • Put the phone down during conversations. Give the gift of full attention—it’s a rare and powerful act of love.
  • Share what God is teaching you. A simple text or word of encouragement can be a lifeline to someone else.
  • Gather in small groups or with a friend to talk about what God is doing in your lives.

Serve: Love in Action

Finally, we are called to Serve—love in action. Distraction can make us passive, but focus on Christ compels us to act. As Pastor Jim said, “Whatever consistently captures our attention eventually shapes our affection.” When Jesus captures our attention, love pours out in service.

  • Look for small ways to serve at home, church, or in the community—a meal delivered, a note sent, a need met.
  • Ask God to show you opportunities to be His hands and feet each day.
  • Remember Galatians 5:13 (NIV): “Serve one another humbly in love.”

Becoming the Change

Lakeview Christian Church exists to “be the change as Jesus has changed us.” This transformation doesn’t happen by accident. It begins by reclaiming our attention from the world and giving it back to God. As we do, we become people who study to know and love God, share to know and love others, and serve with love in action.

Let’s ask ourselves: What is consistently capturing my attention? Is it drawing me closer to Christ, or further away? Today, let’s take a step—maybe it’s setting aside a distraction, opening God’s Word, or reaching out to someone in love. Small changes, made consistently, shape not just our days but our hearts.

God is ready to meet us, transform us, and use us to bring His love to a distracted world. Let’s fix our eyes on Him, and be the change.
