The Secret to a Resilient Faith: David’s Habit and Our Hope

At Lakeview Christian Church, we’re committed to living out our mission: Be the Change as Jesus has changed us. But real, lasting change isn’t about surface-level behavior modification. It’s about developing habits of the heart—habits modeled by men and women of faith throughout Scripture. Drew’s sermon on the life of David reveals a powerful secret to spiritual resilience, one we’re invited to practice together as a church family.

David’s Consistent Response: Dependence on God

What set David apart? Drew pointed out that, whether facing Goliath or grieving the loss of a child, David’s response was always the same: turn to God.

“Every victory, every failure, same response from David. David faces Goliath. David says, the battle belongs to the Lord. David sits on a throne. No, God establishes kingdoms. David before Nathan: God, you can fix this. You can give me a clean heart. David at the side of his deceased son praises God.”

David’s habit was humility and dependence. He never forgot who the true King was. This is what made him a man after God’s own heart—not perfection, but unwavering trust in God’s sovereignty and goodness.

“I Am Not, But I Know I AM.”

Drew summed up David’s secret to surviving both success and failure like this:

“I am not, but I know the I AM.”

This echoes God’s self-revelation to Moses in Exodus 3:14 (NIV):

“God said to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM.’”

David’s greatness was not in his strength, but in his recognition of God’s supremacy. When David succeeded, he gave God the glory. When he failed, he ran to God for mercy. This posture of humility and surrender is the foundation for a resilient, hope-filled faith.

The Fulfillment in Jesus

Everything David longed for—“a clean heart, a new life, God’s Holy Spirit and presence to never leave him”—is fulfilled in Jesus. Through Christ’s death and resurrection, we receive the Holy Spirit, the assurance of God’s presence, and the promise of new life.

John 14:16-17 (NIV):

“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth… you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.”

Romans 8:11 (NIV):

“And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.”

Be the Change: Just 3 in Action

David’s habit is a blueprint for us at Lakeview as we live out “Just 3”:

• Study: “Study to love and know God.” Like David, we anchor ourselves in God’s Word, reminding ourselves daily that He is God and we are not. This discipline fosters humility and keeps our hearts soft to God’s leading.
• Share: “Share to know and love others.” David’s psalms are songs of both pain and praise, shared with the community of faith. When we share our own journeys—our victories and struggles—we build resilient relationships and encourage one another to trust God in every season.
• Serve: “Serve: Love in action.” A heart shaped by God’s presence moves outward in service. When we acknowledge our dependence on God, we become vessels of His love to a hurting world.

Our Hope: Changed by Jesus, Changing the World

Drew’s message is clear: “Everything that David longed for… is offered to me and you through the cross of Jesus Christ.” We don’t have to be perfect. We don’t have to have all the answers. We just need to know the One who is perfect, the great “I AM.”
