This week, as we light the Shepherd’s Candle, we celebrate the joy that breaks into our world through the birth of Jesus. The theme is joy—joy found not in circumstances, but in the good news of a Savior who has come for all.
Shepherds: The First to Hear the Good News
On the night Jesus was born, God chose an unlikely audience for the announcement: shepherds watching their flocks outside Bethlehem. In that ordinary setting, an angel appeared with a message that would change the world:
“And the angel said to them, ‘Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.’”
(Luke 2:10-11 ESV)
Suddenly, the sky was filled with angels praising God. The shepherds hurried to Bethlehem, found Mary and Joseph, and saw the newborn Jesus lying in a manger. Their response was immediate—they shared the good news with others and returned, “glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen” (see Luke 2:20 ESV).
Jesus: Our Good Shepherd
The joy the shepherds experienced that night is the same joy offered to us. Jesus, the child in the manger, would later declare:
“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”
(John 10:11 ESV)
Jesus came not only to be born, but also to give His life for us—to guide, protect, and save us. Our joy is rooted in this truth: We are known and loved by the Good Shepherd, who leads us to abundant life.
Joy: More Than a Feeling
The joy of Advent is not just a fleeting emotion. It is the deep gladness that comes from knowing our Savior—knowing that we are never alone, never forgotten, and never without hope. Like the shepherds, we are invited to respond with excitement, worship, and a desire to share this good news with others.
Reflection:
- Where do you find your deepest joy?
- How can you share the good news of Jesus, the Good Shepherd, with those around you this season?
As you light the Shepherd’s Candle, let its brightness remind you: true joy is found in Jesus, who came for you and for all people. May your heart overflow with joy as you celebrate His coming!
