Advent Week 1: The Prophecy Candle — Hope for a Waiting World

As the first Sunday of Advent arrives, Christians around the world light the Prophecy Candle. This candle shines with the theme of hope—a hope rooted not in wishful thinking, but in the unbreakable promises of God.

For centuries before Jesus’ birth, God’s people waited in longing and expectation. Their world was often dark and uncertain, but into that darkness came God’s word through His prophets: a Savior was coming.

God’s Promises Through the Prophets

Long before the birth in Bethlehem, God spoke through the prophet Isaiah, promising a Savior who would bring light and joy to a people walking in darkness. Isaiah declared:

“The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone. … For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
(Isaiah 9:2, 6 ESV)

Again, Isaiah pointed forward to the miracle of the virgin birth:

“Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.”
(Isaiah 7:14 ESV)

And through the prophet Micah, God even revealed where this Savior would be born:

“But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days.”
(Micah 5:2 ESV)

Jesus: The Fulfillment of God’s Promise

Hundreds of years after these words, Jesus Christ was born—fulfilling every detail of God’s promise. The Gospel of Matthew tells us:

“All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: ‘Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel’ (which means, God with us).”
(Matthew 1:22-23 ESV)

God had not forgotten His people. Every prophecy, every promise, was kept in Jesus.

Hope: Trusting in a Faithful God

The hope we celebrate at Advent is not just a vague optimism. It is the confidence that the God who kept His promises before will keep them again. When we light the Prophecy Candle, we remember: God’s word never fails. Even when circumstances are dark, our hope is anchored in God’s faithfulness.

Reflection:

  • Where do you need hope this Advent season?
  • What would it look like to trust God’s promises—especially when you cannot yet see their fulfillment?

As you light the Prophecy Candle this week, let its flame remind you: God always keeps His word. Our hope is secure in Him.
