Advent: The Christ Candle — Jesus, the Light of the World

As Advent draws to its joyous conclusion, we come to the center candle—the Christ Candle. This candle shines brightest of all, reminding us that Jesus Himself is the fulfillment of every promise, the joy of every longing heart, and the true Light of the World.

A Journey From Promise to Fulfillment

Throughout Advent, each candle has told part of God’s story:

  • The Prophecy Candle declared hope as God promised a Savior long before Jesus was born.
  • The Bethlehem Candle brought peace, as God’s promised King arrived in humble circumstances.
  • The Shepherd’s Candle overflowed with joy, as ordinary people rejoiced at the birth of the Messiah.
  • The Angel’s Candle proclaimed love as heaven announced good news to all people.

Now, at the center, the Christ Candle celebrates the greatest gift: Jesus Himself.

Jesus: The Fulfillment of God’s Promise

God’s promises were not empty words. He kept every one in Jesus. As the Gospel of John proclaims:

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
(John 1:1-5 ESV)

Jesus said:

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
(John 8:12 ESV)

In a world that can feel dark and confusing, Jesus is our true Light—guiding, illuminating, and giving us new life.

Celebrating the Greatest Gift

On Christmas, we celebrate not just a baby in a manger, but the arrival of God Himself—Immanuel, God with us. Jesus is the hope for the hopeless, peace for the restless, joy for the weary, and love for the lonely. He is the gift we could never earn and the fulfillment of every longing.

Reflection:

  • How does Jesus bring light into your life today?
  • As you celebrate Christmas, how can you share His light with those around you?

As the Christ Candle shines at the center of the Advent wreath, let it remind you: every promise finds its “yes” in Jesus. He is the Light that darkness cannot overcome, the Savior of the world, and the greatest gift ever given.

May your Christmas be filled with the light, hope, peace, joy, and love of Christ—today and always.
