The Barabbas Exchange – Understanding Your Freedom in Christ

barabbas

Walking Free While Another Takes Your Place

Imagine standing in chains, condemned to death, waiting for your execution. Then suddenly, inexplicably, you’re walking out free while an innocent man carries the cross meant for you. This was Barabbas’s reality—and it’s a powerful picture of what Jesus has done for each of us.

At Lakeview Christian Church of Portage Lakes, we believe in being the change as Jesus has changed us through our “Just 3” mission: Study to love and know God, Share to know and love others, and Serve as love in action. The Barabbas story perfectly illustrates why this transformation is possible.

We Are All Barabbas

The apostle Paul delivers sobering news in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Every person—including you and me—stands guilty before a holy God. The consequences of sin are steep: death and eternal separation from God.

But here’s where the gospel becomes beautifully personal. Romans 5:6-8 continues: “At just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

The Cross That Changed Everything

Barabbas walked away with his life that day because Jesus took his place. The same is true for us. The cross prepared for you—the punishment you deserved—was carried by Jesus instead. This isn’t just ancient history; it’s the foundation of Christian faith and the reason we can experience true freedom.

This exchange demonstrates God’s incredible love. Jesus didn’t wait for us to clean up our lives or prove ourselves worthy. While we were still sinners—still rebellious, still broken, still lost—Christ died for us.

Living in Gratitude

Understanding that you are Barabbas should transform how you live. When you grasp that Jesus took the cross meant for you, gratitude becomes the foundation of your Christian life. This deep appreciation should overflow into your relationships, your marriage, your friendships, and how you treat everyone you encounter.

At Lakeview Christian Church, we encourage our community to let this truth sink deep. The freedom and forgiveness you’re longing for isn’t found in worldly success, relationships, or achievements. It’s found in the person of Christ alone.

Your Response Today

Maybe today is the day you need to hear this gospel message clearly: Jesus loves you so deeply that He carried your cross. The forgiveness, purpose, and freedom you’re searching for is available right now through faith in Christ.

If you’ve never put your trust in Jesus, today can be that day. Say, “Jesus, I want to put my trust in You. I want to follow You. I want to experience You. You are worthy of my life.”

For those who’ve been following Jesus for a while, let this story serve as a reminder of God’s deep love for you. Remember that Christ took upon Himself the cross meant for you, and let that gratitude change how you live, love, and serve others.

Just like Barabbas, you can walk away free because Jesus took the cross that was not intended for Him.
