At Lakeview Christian Church, our mission is simple yet profound: Be the change as Jesus has changed us. This change begins in the deepest places of our hearts, where pride and humility wrestle for control. The Book of James, especially chapter 4, brings this struggle into sharp focus, offering wisdom for anyone longing to walk more closely with God.
The Voice of Pride vs. The Posture of Humility
Pride whispers, “I can do this on my own. I know what’s best.” It is self-assured, convinced that independence is strength and that needing others—or needing God—is a sign of weakness. But the Bible paints a very different picture:
“God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” (James 4:6, ESV)
Humility, by contrast, says, “Lord, I need you. My wisdom is limited, my desires can be misled, teach me to follow you.” Humility is not mere self-doubt or low self-esteem; it is a conscious choice to trust God more than ourselves. When we humble ourselves, pride is put in its place, and God’s grace flows freely.
What Does Humble Faith Look Like?
James doesn’t leave us wondering what humility looks like in practice. He calls us to a specific, actionable posture:
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7">James 4:7, ESV)
Notice the order—submission comes first. The word “submit” means more than just agreeing that God exists. True submission is about placing our lives under God’s leadership, letting His word have the final say. It’s a daily, sometimes moment-by-moment, decision to believe God’s wisdom is greater than our own.
The Freedom in Submission
Many people fear that submission is about losing freedom, but the opposite is true. When we submit to God, we are freed from the tyranny of our own pride, fear, and self-centered desires. We are also empowered to stand strong against the enemy:
“Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7b, ESV)
We cannot resist temptation or spiritual attack in our own strength. It is only when we are submitted to God that resistance is possible and victory is promised.
The “Just 3” Lifestyle: Study, Share, Serve
At Lakeview Christian Church, we believe that lasting change happens as we live out three simple practices—Study, Share, and Serve. This is what we call our “Just 3” approach:
- Study to Love and Know God:
Humility begins with acknowledging our need for God’s wisdom. When we read and meditate on Scripture, we learn to trust God’s voice above our own.“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105, ESV) - Share to Know and Love Others:
Pride isolates; humility connects. By sharing life, faith, and struggles with others, we build authentic community. We learn to listen, forgive, and encourage.“Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.” (1 Thessalonians 5:11, ESV) - Serve—Love in Action:
True humility always overflows in service. Serving others is not about earning favor with God but expressing the love we have received from Him.“By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:35, ESV)
Be the Change—Because Jesus Has Changed Us
Change is not just something we strive for; it is something Jesus has accomplished in us. He is our example of ultimate humility:
“And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.” (Philippians 2:8, ESV)
As we humble ourselves before God—submitting, studying, sharing, and serving—we become the change our world desperately needs. We do not do this from a place of pride, but out of gratitude for the grace we have received.
