At Lakeview Christian Church, our mission is clear: Be the change as Jesus has changed us. But what does real change look like in a world full of distractions, ambitions, and conflict? James 4 offers a sobering answer.
“You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.” (James 4:4, ESV)
James does not hold back. He confronts the reality of a divided heart—of wanting God’s blessings while resisting His authority. This is not just ancient wisdom; it’s a mirror for every believer today.
The Danger of Divided Desires
To “cheat on God with the world” is a powerful image. It’s about more than just big, obvious sins. It’s about the daily ways our desires pull us away from God’s best for us. James presses us to ask: Am I seeking what I want, or what God wants?
When conflict arises—whether at home, work, or even in church—James urges us to pause. Why? Because our first instinct is often to blame others, defend our position, or fight for our own desires. Instead, Scripture calls us to self-examination:
“What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you?” (James 4:1, ESV)
What desire of mine is being threatened? Is it power, respect, comfort, or being right? Or am I more concerned with representing Christ in the situation than with “winning” the argument?
Surrender: The Starting Point for Change
James’s solution is radical but simple: surrender. We must stop being at war with ourselves and with God. In surrendering to God’s authority, we find peace with ourselves and with others.
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.” (James 4:7-8a, ESV)
Surrender is not weakness. It is the path to strength, clarity, and genuine transformation. It means letting go of selfish demands and trusting God’s wisdom above our own.
Everyday Faith—Not Perfect Faith
It’s important to remember that everyday faith does not mean we never disagree or struggle. Rather, it’s about allowing God to deal with our hearts in the midst of disagreement. We bring our conflicted desires to Him and let His Spirit transform us from the inside out.
“Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.” (James 4:10, ESV)
Living Our Mission: Just 3
At Lakeview Christian Church, we live out this call through our “Just 3” approach:
- Study: We study to love and know God. Through God’s Word, we learn what it means to surrender our hearts and desires to Him.“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105, ESV)
- Share: We share our lives and faith to know and love others. In every interaction, we seek to bring Christ’s grace into our relationships, especially when conflict threatens to divide.“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.” (John 13:34, ESV)
- Serve: We serve as love in action. Surrender leads us to serve others with humility, putting their needs before our own and embodying the love of Jesus in practical ways.“By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” (John 13:35, ESV)
Be the Change—Because Jesus Has Changed Us
Our mission is not just a slogan. It’s a daily call to transformation. As Jesus has changed us, we commit to being agents of change in our homes, communities, and world. We do this not by seeking the world’s approval, but by living with undivided hearts—fully surrendered to God.
So this week, when conflict or temptation arises, pause. Ask yourself: Am I following my own desires or God’s will? Is there something I need to surrender? Let’s choose to draw near to God, trusting that when we do, He draws near to us.
At Lakeview Christian Church, we’re on this journey together. Let’s be the change—through study, sharing, and service—as Jesus has changed us.
