Steering Your Words: How Everyday Faith Shapes Every Conversation

The Power to Steer: Words that Shape Our Lives

At Lakeview Christian Church, we believe that every word matters. Our mission is to “Be the Change as Jesus has changed us,” and nowhere is that more evident than in the way we speak. While we can’t control what others do or say, God empowers us to control our own responses. In a world full of noisy opinions, criticism, and division, Christians are called to respond differently—reflecting the character of Christ in every conversation.

James, the brother of Jesus, uses a vivid picture to describe this:

“If we put bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us, we guide their whole bodies as well. Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs.”
(James 3:3-4, ESV)

Just as a small rudder steers a massive ship, your words can steer the direction of your life and the lives of those around you.

We Can’t Control Others—But We Can Control Ourselves

It’s tempting to believe that our words are powerless in a world of chaos. But Scripture reminds us: the way we speak can either move people toward Jesus or away from Him. Whether you’re a parent, grandparent, teacher, church leader, or simply a follower of Christ, someone is always listening and learning from you.

Paul encourages us:

“Let all that you do be done in love.” (1 Corinthians 16:14, ESV)

Before you speak, pause and ask:

  • Where will these words take this conversation?
  • Will they move us toward understanding or conflict?
  • Toward restoration or resentment?
  • Most importantly, will they move us toward Jesus or away from Him?

Everyday faith means pausing long enough to consider the direction our words are taking us—and others.

Everyday Faith: Steering Conversations with Christlike Wisdom

At Lakeview, we call this intentionality the “Just 3” challenge: Study, Share, Serve.

  • Study:
By studying God’s Word, we fill our minds and hearts with His wisdom. When we’re rooted in Scripture, our responses are shaped by God’s truth, not our emotions.“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom.” (Colossians 3:16, ESV)
  • Share:
Sharing isn’t just about evangelism; it’s about letting every conversation reflect the gospel. When disagreements arise, ask yourself: can I share grace instead of anger? Can I point someone to hope instead of despair?
  • Serve:
Serving is love in action, and sometimes the greatest act of service is to listen before you speak, to offer encouragement rather than criticism, to use words to build up rather than tear down.“Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.” (1 Thessalonians 5:11, ESV)

The Influence of Words: You Are Always Leading

Whether you realize it or not, your words have influence. Children, students, friends, and coworkers are shaped by the way you respond in stressful moments. The question is not whether you are influencing others, but how.

James reminds us that,

“No human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.” (James 3:8, ESV)

On our own, this seems impossible. But with God’s help, we can learn to pause, pray, and let the Holy Spirit guide our words. Surrendering our speech to Christ is an everyday act of discipleship.

Practical Steps to Steer Your Speech

  • Pause before responding: Take a breath and pray for wisdom.
  • Ask yourself: “Where will these words take this conversation?”
  • Choose words that heal: Speak truth in love, build up, encourage, and restore.
  • Model Christ to your children, friends, and community: Let your speech be a testimony to the transforming power of Jesus.

Be the Change—Steer Every Conversation Toward Christ

At Lakeview Christian Church, we are committed to living out our faith in every conversation. We can’t control the wind, but by God’s grace, we can control the rudder. Let’s “Be the Change” by letting our words consistently point others to Jesus.

As you take on the “Just 3” challenge—Study, Share, Serve—remember: someone is listening. Let your speech always move people closer to Christ.
