The Double Blessing of Humility and Trust: A Reflection on Communion

At Lakeview Christian Church of Portage Lakes, our mission is to “Be the change as Jesus has changed us.” We believe that transformation comes through “Just 3” – Study, Share, and Serve. As we gather for communion, we are reminded of the profound wisdom and blessings that come from approaching God with humility and trust.

A Heart of Humility and Trust

In 1 Kings 3:11-13, God responds to Solomon’s request for wisdom with a promise of unparalleled blessings: “Behold, I give you a wise and discerning mind, so that none like you has been before you and none like you shall rise after you. I shall also give you what you have not asked for, both riches and honor, so that no other king shall compare with you all your days.” Solomon’s request was not for personal gain but for the wisdom to lead God’s people. His humility and trust in God were rewarded with both what he needed and what he had not asked for.

As we approach the communion table, we are called to adopt a similar stance of heart. When we start with God, acknowledging our dependence on Him and seeking His will above our own, we open ourselves to His abundant blessings. James 4:10 reminds us, “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.”

Communion: A Time of Reflection and Renewal

Communion is a sacred time to reflect on the sacrifice of Jesus Christ and to renew our commitment to live according to His teachings. It is a moment to approach God with honesty, acknowledging our struggles and trusting in His provision. As we partake in the bread and the cup, we remember the grace and forgiveness offered through Jesus’ death and resurrection.

In 1 Corinthians 11:28, Paul instructs us, “Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup.” This self-examination is an opportunity to align our hearts with God’s will, to seek His wisdom, and to trust in His plans for our lives.

The Double Blessing

When we approach God with the right stance of heart and humility, we often receive a double blessing. Not only does God provide for our needs, but He also grants us unexpected blessings. Ephesians 3:20-21 beautifully captures this promise: “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.”

At Lakeview Christian Church, we believe that by studying God’s Word, sharing our faith, and serving others, we position ourselves to receive these double blessings. Our mission to “Be the change as Jesus has changed us” is rooted in the understanding that God’s blessings flow abundantly when we live in alignment with His will.
