More Than Just People
It’s not just people who fall apart—it’s situations, circumstances, relationships, health, finances, and dreams. Life itself can feel like it’s disintegrating around us. But Psalm 46:1 offers us an anchor: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
Understanding True Refuge
The Hebrew word for refuge describes a shelter in a dangerous place—a place of protection where you run during a storm. Think about those golf course shelters you sometimes see. They’re called shelters, but they’re practically useless in an actual storm. Most are open on all four sides. Your head might stay dry, but everything else gets soaked. That’s a shelter, but it’s not a refuge.
A refuge is different. A refuge is a true safe place during a storm—somewhere you find complete protection.
Here’s what makes this biblical truth so profound: The psalmist doesn’t say God will provide a safe place. He declares that God IS our safe place.
That distinction changes everything. The safest place isn’t a location or circumstance—it’s a presence. The safest place is in the very presence of God Himself.
God Is Our Strength
The Hebrew word for strength here means power and might that cannot be manufactured. It’s not something we work up ourselves. It’s something we receive from God.
The apostle Paul understood this perfectly. When he pleaded with God to remove his “thorn in the flesh,” God’s response was clear: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9).
God was saying, “Paul, you don’t have to be strong. You need Me to be strong for you.”
This is liberating! We don’t need to muster strength we don’t have. We need to become God-dependent rather than self-sufficient. Isaiah 40:29 reminds us: “He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength.”
A Very Present Help
God is our refuge and strength and a very present help in trouble. That phrase “very present” literally means He is abundantly found—always available. God is never off duty, never too busy, never overwhelmed. He is on call 24/7, always there, never distracted, always present.
Living Out the Refuge
At Lakeview Christian Church of Portage Lakes, we don’t just teach these truths—we live them through our mission to be the change as Jesus has changed us through Just 3: Study, Share, and Serve.
Study – To Love and Know God: When we immerse ourselves in God’s Word, we discover His character as our refuge. We learn that He has been the safe place for His people throughout history—from Noah to David to Daniel.
Share – To Know and Love Others: When we’ve experienced God as our refuge, we naturally share that hope. We become agents of God’s presence in others’ storms, pointing them to the Refuge we’ve found.
Serve – Love in Action: Experiencing God’s refuge transforms us into people who serve. We create safe spaces where people can encounter the God who is truly our refuge.
Fear Not
Psalm 46:2-3 paints a picture of absolute catastrophe: “Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea, though its waters roar and foam.”
Everything is falling apart—yet the declaration stands: We will not fear.
Why? Not because circumstances are stable, but because our confidence isn’t in circumstances—it’s in the God who is present in our lives no matter what’s happening around us.
Think about a young child during a thunderstorm. The crashes of thunder and flashes of lightning are terrifying. But where does that child find comfort? In the arms of mom and dad. That’s their safe place.
If you’re in the midst of a storm today, you can run to the arms of your Heavenly Father.
Where Will You Turn?
The question isn’t whether storms will come—they will. The question is: Where will you turn when they do?
Your job can disappear. Your health can fail. Your finances can vanish. Other people are limited and fallible.
But God is truly our refuge—the God who IS our safe place, our strength, our very present help in trouble.
