The Danger of False Refuges
In times of uncertainty, we naturally seek safety. But what happens when we place our trust in the wrong things? The prophet Isaiah confronted this very issue when ancient Israel made a critical mistake—they sought protection from Babylon by forming an alliance with Egypt instead of trusting in God.
God’s response was sobering: “You have gone to another nation. You’ve made a deal with death.”
Israel believed they were safe, protected by political power and military might. But God saw the truth—they had built their security on something that would ultimately deliver them to the grave rather than to safety.
God’s Jealous Love
Here’s a truth we often overlook: God is a jealous God (Exodus 34:14). This isn’t petty jealousy—it’s protective love. When we rely on anything other than Him for our refuge and stronghold, God may remove those false securities to remind us of an essential reality: He alone is good, trustworthy, and unchanging.
We all have our “Egypts”—the things we turn to instead of God:
- A relationship we think will complete us
- A job that defines our worth
- Financial security that promises peace
- Achievements that validate our existence
- Substances or habits that numb our pain
These aren’t necessarily bad things, but when they become our ultimate things, they become dangerous substitutes for God.
The Cornerstone That Never Moves
In the midst of Isaiah’s warning comes one of Scripture’s most beautiful promises: “See, I lay a stone in Zion, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation. The one who relies on it will never be stricken with panic” (Isaiah 28:16).
This isn’t just poetry—it’s a prophecy pointing directly to Jesus Christ, whom the New Testament identifies as the Cornerstone (Ephesians 2:20, 1 Peter 2:6).
What Makes God Different
Unlike every earthly refuge, God doesn’t move. When you build your life on Him, He cannot be shaken. Consider what happens to our other “strongholds”:
- Careers can vanish overnight
- Health inevitably declines
- Relationships sometimes fail
- Wealth can disappear
- Circumstances constantly change
But God? He remains the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8).
Living Without Panic
Notice what God promises to those who rely on Him: they will “never be stricken with panic.” Not that troubles won’t come—but that when they do, we won’t be overcome by fear and anxiety.
This is the difference between building on sand versus building on rock (Matthew 7:24-27). When storms hit, the foundation determines whether you stand or fall.

Examining Our Hearts
Today, I invite you to search your heart: What are you relying on besides God? What would devastate you if it were taken away? That thing—whatever it is—has likely become a false refuge.
God’s jealous love may prompt Him to remove it, not to harm you, but to draw you back to the only foundation that will never fail.
The safest place in an uncertain world is in the hands of the unshakable God. When you build your life on Christ, the Cornerstone, you discover a peace that circumstances cannot disturb and a hope that trials cannot destroy.
