Finding True Freedom – Your Invitation to Follow Jesus

The Search for Something More

You’re searching for something. Maybe it’s forgiveness for past mistakes, purpose for your life, or freedom from guilt and shame. You’ve looked in relationships, career success, material possessions, and personal achievements. But that deep longing remains unfulfilled.

Here’s the truth you need to hear: The forgiveness, purpose, and freedom you’re longing for isn’t found in this world. It’s found in the person of Christ.

At Lakeview Christian Church of Portage Lakes, we’ve discovered that being the change as Jesus has changed us begins with a simple decision to trust Him. Our “Just 3” mission—Study to love and know God, Share to know and love others, and Serve as love in action—flows from this foundational relationship with Jesus.

Why Jesus Is Different

Jesus isn’t just another religious teacher or moral philosopher. He’s the Son of God who did something no one else could do: He took your place.

Picture this scene: A guilty man named Barabbas stood condemned, waiting for execution. An innocent man named Jesus stood beside him. The crowd was givena choice, and they chose to free Barabbas while sending Jesus to the cross. Barabbas walked away free while Jesus carried the cross meant for him.

This is the gospel message: Jesus took your place. The punishment you deserved, He carried. The death you earned through sin, He died. The separation from God that should be yours, He experienced.

God’s Deep Love for You

Romans 5:8 declares: “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Notice the timing—while we were still sinners. Jesus didn’t wait for you to get your life together, overcome your addictions, fix your relationships, or become a better person. He loved you in your mess, in your brokenness, in your rebellion.

This is the deep love God has for you. Not a love you have to earn, but a love freely given. Not a love based on your performance, but a love rooted in His character.

Today Can Be Your Day

Maybe you’ve heard about Jesus before but never personally put your trust in Him. Maybe you’ve been searching for meaning in all the wrong places. Maybe you’re tired of carrying guilt and shame.

Today can be the day everything changes.

You don’t need to clean up your life first. You don’t need to have all your questions answered. You don’t need to be perfect. You simply need to come to Jesus as you are and say:

“Jesus, I want to put my trust in You. I want to follow You. I want to experience You. You are worthy of my life.”

What Happens When You Trust Jesus

When you put your faith in Christ, several things happen immediately:

You receive forgiveness. Every sin, every mistake, every failure—forgiven. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).

You gain purpose. Your life is no longer aimless. God has plans for you—plans to prosper you, not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11).

You experience freedom. The chains of guilt, shame, and sin are broken. “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed” (John 8:36).

You become part of God’s family. You’re adopted as God’s child with full rights and privileges. “Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God” (John 1:12).

Your Next Steps

If you’re ready to trust Jesus today, here’s what to do:

  1. Acknowledge that you’re a sinner in need of a Savior
  2. Believe that Jesus died for your sins and rose from the dead
  3. Confess Jesus as Lord of your life
  4. Commit to following Him

This isn’t about religion or rules—it’s about a relationship with the God who loves you deeply and gave everything for you.

For Those Already Following Jesus

If you’ve been following Jesus for a while, let this message serve as a reminder. Remember your Barabbas moment—when you stood condemned and Jesus took your place. Let that memory bring you to deep gratitude that changes how you live.

Are there areas where you’ve been compromising your faith? Places where you’re choosing convenience over conviction? Today is the day to return to wholehearted devotion.

Remember: Christ took upon Himself the cross meant for you. Just like Barabbas, you can walk away free because Jesus took the cross not intended for Him.

An Invitation

At Lakeview Christian Church of Portage Lakes, we’re a community of people who have experienced this freedom. We’re not perfect—we’re forgiven. We’re not better than anyone—we’ve simply encountered the love of Christ and it’s changed everything.

We invite you to take this step of faith today. Don’t wait for the “perfect” moment. Don’t wait until you feel ready. Jesus is ready for you right now, exactly as you are.

The forgiveness you need, the purpose you crave, the freedom you long for—it’s all found in Christ. And it’s available to you today.

Make the decision. Put your trust in Jesus. Let today be the day your life changes forever. Just like Barabbas walked away free, so can you.
