Pressed But Not Crushed: Finding Strength in Life’s Battles

battle

Life has a way of pressing in on us from every side. Financial pressures, health concerns, relationship struggles, and unexpected crises can make us feel like the walls are closing in. But at Lakeview Christian Church of Portage Lakes, we believe there’s a powerful truth that changes everything: God’s strength is made perfect in our weakness.

Treasures in Fragile Vessels

The Apostle Paul wrote something profound in 2 Corinthians 4:7-10: “But we have this treasure stored up in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.”

Why jars of clay? Because they’re fragile. They crack easily. They break under pressure. Paul is saying that our human weakness isn’t a design flaw—it’s intentional. When fragile people accomplish extraordinary things, everyone knows it wasn’t human strength that made it happen. It was God.

This same reality echoes throughout Scripture. David spent years running from King Saul, hiding in caves, facing impossible odds. Yet he survived and thrived—not because of his own cleverness, but because God was his rock and refuge.

The Four Pillars of Unshakeable Faith

Paul gives us four powerful declarations that form pillars of faith for every believer facing hardship:

1. Hard Pressed, But Not Crushed

“We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed.”

The room may be caving in around you. Circumstances may be squeezing the life out of you. But there’s a difference between pressure and destruction. God provides just enough space for you to breathe, to stand, to keep going. You may feel the weight, but you won’t be flattened.

2. Perplexed, But Not in Despair

“Perplexed, but not in despair.”

Confusion is not the same as hopelessness. You may not see the way out. The path forward might be completely unclear. But despair says there is no way out—and that’s simply not true when God is involved. Even in chaos, hope remains because God holds your future.

3. Persecuted, But Not Abandoned

“Persecuted, but not abandoned.”

People may turn against you. You may face opposition for your faith, your values, or your choices. But persecution doesn’t mean God has left you. In fact, it’s often in our loneliest moments that we discover God’s presence most powerfully. You are never alone.

4. Struck Down, But Not Destroyed

“Struck down, but not destroyed.”

Like a soldier knocked to the ground in battle, you may take hits that leave you reeling. You may fall. You may feel defeated. But struck down doesn’t mean dead. God’s power raises us up again. It’s not over until God says it’s over.

Living Out “Just 3” in the Battle

At Lakeview Christian Church of Portage Lakes, our mission is to be the change as Jesus has changed us. We live this through “Just 3”:

Study (to love and know God): When we’re pressed on every side, we need to know who God is. His Word reminds us that He is our rock, our fortress, our deliverer.

Share (to know and love others): Your testimony of God’s faithfulness in hard times is powerful. When others see you pressed but not crushed, they witness God’s sustaining power.

Serve (love in action): Even in our weakness, God calls us to serve. Our fragility doesn’t disqualify us—it showcases His strength working through us.

The Source of Our Strength

Paul makes it crystal clear: this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. It wasn’t anything Paul accomplished on his own. It wasn’t David’s military skill or strategic genius. It’s always been God.

When you feel like you can’t take another step, remember Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Not through your own willpower. Not through positive thinking. Through Christ.

Your Battle Isn’t Over

Whatever battle you’re facing today—financial, relational, physical, emotional, or spiritual—know this: you may be pressed, but you’re not crushed. You may be confused, but you’re not without hope. You may feel alone, but God has not abandoned you. You may be knocked down, but you’re not destroyed.

The same God who delivered David, who sustained Paul through shipwrecks and beatings, who raised Jesus from the dead—that God is with you right now.

At Lakeview Christian Church of Portage Lakes, we’d love to walk alongside you in your journey. Because when we carry these treasures in jars of clay together, the world sees that the power belongs to God alone.
