The Darkness at the Cross – Understanding Jesus’ Sacrifice

When Darkness Fell: The Weight of Sin on the Cross

The crucifixion of Jesus Christ wasn’t just another execution in Roman history. It was the moment when the weight of all human sin was placed upon the sinless Son of God. At Lakeview Christian Church of Portage Lakes, we study this profound truth to better love and know God.

Supernatural Darkness Descends

Matthew 27 and Mark 15 both record an extraordinary event: from noon until 3 PM, darkness covered the entire land. This wasn’t symbolic language or poetic exaggeration—it was real, eerie, and cold. It wasn’t normal.

Throughout Scripture, darkness often represented God’s judgment. In Egypt, darkness fell as judgment during the plagues. But this time was different. Judgment wasn’t falling on Egypt, Jerusalem, or Israel. It was falling on Jesus.

“My God, My God, Why Have You Forsaken Me?”

In the middle of this supernatural darkness, Jesus cried out words that echo through eternity: “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?”—”My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Matthew 27:46).

He was quoting Psalm 22, but this wasn’t confusion or delusion. It was substitution.

Jesus was experiencing what the prophet Isaiah had foreseen centuries earlier: “But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities” (Isaiah 53:5). At this moment, the full weight of sin—your sin, my sin, the sin of all humanity—was placed upon Christ.

The Road to Redemption

This was the pivotal moment on the road to redemption. For the first and only time in all eternity, the perfect unity of the Trinity was broken. The Father turned His face away as Jesus became sin for us.

2 Corinthians 5:21 explains it this way: “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”

Think about that. Jesus, who never sinned, became sin itself so that we could become righteous. He took what we deserved so we could receive what He deserved.

Why Does This Matter Today?

Understanding the darkness at the cross changes how we view sin. We often treat sin casually—”just a little white lie,” “just one mistake,” “everyone does it.” But if sin required the death of God’s Son, if it demanded such a complete sacrifice, then it’s far more serious than we want to admit.

At Lakeview Christian Church, our “Just 3” mission calls us to:

Study – Diving deep into Scripture helps us understand the gravity of sin and the magnitude of grace Share – When we grasp what Jesus endured, we can’t help but share this good news with others Serve – Understanding Christ’s sacrifice motivates us to serve others with love in action

The Weight He Carried

Jesus didn’t just experience physical torture on the cross. He bore:

  • The weight of every lie ever told
  • The burden of every act of violence
  • The shame of every betrayal
  • The guilt of every selfish choice
  • The consequence of every sin—past, present, and future

And He did it willingly. John 10:18 records Jesus saying, “No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord.”

From Darkness to Light

The darkness at the cross wasn’t the end of the story. Three days later, Jesus rose from the dead, proving that His sacrifice was accepted and that sin and death were defeated.

Because Jesus endured that darkness, we can walk in the light. Because He was forsaken, we can never be abandoned. Because He experienced separation from God, we can experience eternal communion with Him.

This is the gospel—the good news that changes everything.

At Lakeview Christian Church of Portage Lakes, we’re a community transformed by this truth. We’re being the change as Jesus has changed us, and we invite you to join us on this journey of faith.

The darkness has been defeated. The light has come. And His name is Jesus.
