From Spectator to Disciple: Embracing Our Role in God’s Kingdom

spectator

In the bustling streets of Jerusalem, a humble procession unfolded that would forever change the course of history. Jesus, the King of Kings, entered the city not with the grandeur of earthly royalty, but on the back of a donkey, surrounded by ordinary people. This event, known as the triumphal entry, is a powerful reminder of the kind of kingdom Jesus came to establish—a kingdom not of this world, but one that transforms hearts and lives. At Lakeview Christian Church of Portage Lakes, we are called to “Be the change as Jesus has changed us,” and this begins by moving from being mere spectators to active participants in God’s story.

The Spectators: Watching from a Distance

Many in the crowd were mere spectators, intrigued by Jesus but unwilling to commit. They wanted a Savior on their terms, one who would rescue them without requiring change. This attitude persists today, as some prefer to watch from a distance, hesitant to fully embrace Jesus’ call. Yet, Jesus desires more than passive followers; He calls us to active participation in His kingdom.

Serve: Love in Action

Serving others is a tangible expression of our faith and a reflection of Jesus’ love. In Matthew 20:28, Jesus declares, “the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” By serving, we demonstrate love in action, embodying the change Jesus has made in us. Galatians 5:13 urges us to “serve one another humbly in love,” transforming our communities and the world.

The Call to Discipleship: Moving Beyond Observation

To truly follow Jesus, we must move beyond mere observation and become active disciples. In Matthew 4:19, Jesus calls His disciples to follow Him, promising to make them “fishers of men.” This call extends to us today, inviting us to engage fully in our faith journey and participate in God’s work on earth.

Conclusion: Embracing Our Role in God’s Kingdom

The triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem is a powerful reminder of the kind of King we serve—one who calls us to humility, service, and transformation. At Lakeview Christian Church of Portage Lakes, we are committed to “Be the change as Jesus has changed us” through “Just 3” – Study, Share, Serve. Let us move from being spectators to active participants in God’s kingdom, embracing our role in His story and proclaiming His love to the world.
