Get Out of the Barnyard and Truly Live

live

Have you ever felt like you’re just going through the motions, stuck in a routine that feels safe but unfulfilling? Imagine a wild duck, once free and adventurous, settling for the comfort of a barnyard. This parable, shared by Soren Kierkegaard, paints a vivid picture of how easy it is to become complacent, losing sight of the greater journey we’re meant to take. Just like the wild duck, we can find ourselves content with the “corn” of life—our routines, comforts, and the status quo—forgetting the call to soar higher. But what if there’s more to life than just the barnyard? What if we’re called to something greater, something that requires us to spread our wings and fly?

The Apostle Paul, in his letter to the Thessalonians, commends them for their faith and love but urges them to keep growing, to never settle. He reminds them—and us—that the Christian journey is one of continuous growth and transformation. It’s about living to please God, being set apart, and resisting the pull of the world that tries to keep us grounded. So, how do we break free from the barnyard and truly live the life God has called us to?

Live to Please God

Paul’s message is clear: our lives should be a reflection of our desire to please God. This isn’t about following a set of rules but about living in a way that honors Him. It’s about walking in faith, growing in love, and continually seeking to know Him more. The Thessalonians were doing well, but Paul encouraged them to do even more. Why? Because our journey with God is never complete. There’s always more to learn, more ways to grow, and more opportunities to serve.

Be Set Apart

Being a follower of Jesus means being different from the world. Paul calls us to be holy, to be sanctified, which means being set apart for God’s purposes. This doesn’t mean isolating ourselves but living in a way that reflects God’s character. It’s about making choices that honor Him, even when it’s difficult. The world may offer temporary pleasures, but true fulfillment comes from living a life that aligns with God’s will.

Resist the Pull of the World

The world is full of distractions that can pull us away from our faith. Like the wild duck, we can become comfortable in the barnyard, forgetting the freedom and adventure that comes with following Jesus. Paul warns us to keep moving forward, to keep growing, so we don’t get stuck. It’s about being intentional in our faith, surrounding ourselves with others who encourage us, and staying focused on God’s promises.

Conclusion

The point is, Jesus wants your whole heart. What will you do this week to give it to Him? Will you choose to step out of the barnyard and truly live? It’s not always easy, but the rewards are worth it. When we live to please God, set ourselves apart, and resist the pull of the world, we experience the fullness of life that He promises. So, what step will you take today to spread your wings and soar?

Prayer

Heavenly Father, thank You for calling us to a life of purpose and adventure. Help us to break free from the comforts of the barnyard and live fully for You. Give us the courage to grow in our faith, to be set apart, and to resist the distractions of the world. May our lives be a reflection of Your love and grace. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
