Ever felt like fear just shows up uninvited? You’re going about your day when suddenly anxiety whispers, “What if this doesn’t work out?” That quiet dread has a way of making your world smaller, closing doors, and keeping you stuck. If you’ve ever felt paralyzed by fear, you’re in good company—the disciples knew that feeling all too well.
Fear Meets the Risen Christ
Picture this: Jesus’ closest friends huddled behind locked doors, hearts racing, minds spinning with confusion. The crucifixion had shattered their hopes. Reports of an empty tomb left them more bewildered than comforted. They were talking, processing, trying to make sense of it all when—without warning—Jesus appeared right in the middle of the room.
He didn’t knock. He didn’t wait for them to get their theology straight or their fear under control. He simply showed up.
Here’s what’s remarkable: Jesus didn’t open with “Don’t be afraid”—the usual angelic greeting throughout Scripture. Instead, He said, “Shalom—peace be with you.” Not circumstantial peace, not the absence of conflict, but something deeper. Jesus offered them His presence, and that changed everything.
The Difference Between Calm and Peace
Think about the difference between trying to calm yourself down and having someone you trust walk into the room and say, “I’m here.” It’s the same reason a crying toddler settles when you give them a hug—presence brings peace in ways techniques never can.
Jesus didn’t just offer comforting words. He showed them His hands and feet. He invited them to touch, to investigate, to know beyond doubt that He was physically, bodily alive. This wasn’t a vision or a ghost—this was resurrection reality. When they were still struggling to believe, He even asked for food and ate broiled fish right in front of them.
Why does this matter? Because our faith isn’t built on spiritual feelings or abstract ideas—it’s anchored in real, historical events. Jesus truly conquered death. He didn’t just inspire hope; He defeated the grave and walked out of the tomb in a glorified body.
From Fear to Mission
Once the disciples saw Jesus—really saw Him—everything changed. Their fear dissolved. Their confusion cleared. Jesus connected the dots, walking them through Scripture and showing how everything pointed to this moment. Then He opened their minds to understand what they’d been reading their whole lives.
And here’s where it gets personal for us: Jesus commissioned them as witnesses, and that same calling extends to you and me today. We don’t need perfect theology or all the answers. We simply share what Jesus has done in our lives—and we do it with the power of the Holy Spirit already inside us.
Take the Next Step
Living in a post-resurrection world means you have access to the same peace the disciples received in that locked room. You don’t have to carry your fear, anxiety, or doubt alone. Jesus still shows up—sometimes in unexpected ways—and His presence still transforms everything.
Here’s your action step: This week, identify one area where fear has been whispering “what if?” Instead of trying to manage it yourself, invite Jesus into that space. Surrender it to Him. Remember, you’re not a slave to fear—you’re a child of God with access to His supernatural peace.
