Embrace the Call: Discovering the True Cost of Discipleship

disciple

Have you ever wondered what it truly means to follow Jesus? In a world where commitments are often fleeting, the call to discipleship stands as a profound invitation to a life of purpose and transformation. This journey isn’t just about attending church once a week; it’s about a radical, daily commitment that reshapes our lives. Let’s explore what it means to be a disciple who makes disciples, as Jesus calls us to in the Great Commission.

The Heart of Discipleship: Radical Allegiance

Imagine being asked to prioritize one relationship above all others. In Luke 14:25-27, Jesus challenges us to place Him above even our closest family ties. At first glance, this might seem harsh, but it’s about loving Jesus more than anything else. It’s about making Him the highest priority in our lives. When our allegiance to Christ conflicts with our personal desires or family expectations, Jesus must come first. This radical allegiance is the foundation of true discipleship.

Consider the story of Jim Elliot, a missionary who gave his life in Ecuador. He famously said, “He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.” This echoes the heart of discipleship—surrendering temporary comforts for eternal rewards. Are you ready to make Jesus your number one priority?

Counting the Cost: Detailed Calculations

Before embarking on any significant journey, it’s wise to count the cost. Jesus illustrates this with parables of a man building a tower and a king going to war (Luke 14:28-32). Both scenarios require careful planning and consideration. Similarly, following Jesus isn’t a decision to be made lightly. It’s a lifelong commitment that demands sacrifice and perseverance.

Think about a gym membership. Signing up is easy, but getting in shape requires dedication and effort. Many people want the benefits without the commitment. In the same way, discipleship requires more than just a title; it demands action. Are you prepared to face rejection, ridicule, or even persecution for your faith? Have you truly counted the cost of following Christ?

Complete Surrender: Letting Go

Jesus concludes with a powerful statement in Luke 14:33: “Any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.” This call to complete surrender means releasing our grip on everything we hold dear. Our possessions, time, gifts, and even our very lives belong to Jesus. We are stewards, not owners.

Consider the story of the rich young ruler in Matthew 19. He followed the commandments but struggled to let go of his wealth. Jesus invites us to let go of anything that hinders our relationship with Him. What are you holding onto that prevents you from fully embracing discipleship? Is it a hidden sin, your career, or your comfort? Jesus calls us to let go and trust Him completely.

Taking the Next Step

Discipleship is costly, but the rewards are eternal. It requires radical allegiance, detailed calculations, and complete surrender. As you reflect on your journey, ask yourself: Are you part of the crowd, or are you a true disciple? Have you counted the cost and surrendered all to follow Jesus?

A Prayer for Discipleship

Heavenly Father, thank You for calling us to be Your disciples. Help us to place You above all else and to count the cost of following You. Give us the courage to surrender everything we hold dear and to trust You completely. May our lives reflect Your love and grace as we seek to make disciples in Your name. Amen.

As you consider these questions and this prayer, remember that Jesus isn’t looking for fans; He’s calling for followers. Embrace the call to discipleship today and experience the transformative power of a life fully devoted to Christ.
