the Book of James – Everyday Faith

📖 We’re starting a brand new series. “Everyday Faith” walks through the book of James, one of the most practical letters in the New Testament — trials, attitudes, the tongue, serving, humility. We’ll also be sharing communion together. If you’ve been looking for a good week to bring someone, a series kickoff is it.

In the center of Main Street in Enterprise, Alabama, there’s a monument to a bug. The boll weevil destroyed the cotton crop and nearly ruined the town. So they planted peanuts instead, and got richer than cotton ever made them. They built the statue to the thing that wrecked them.

🌱 “Count it all joy… when you meet trials of various kinds” — James says when, not if. And trials is plural. This isn’t a maybe-someday letter

💪 Verse 3 says the testing of your faith produces steadfastness — same reason resistance training works. No pain, no gain. Nobody ever got stronger by avoiding the weight

🙏 “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously” — but notice step one. You have to admit you don’t have it. For some of us that’s the whole hurdle

🌊 Verse 6 describes the doubter as a wave of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind — faith that rises and falls with circumstances. Good day, God is good. Bad day, where’d He go

👑 “Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial… he will receive the crown of life” — trials are real, but they are not permanent

Jesus knew something about pressure. Alone in the garden, mocked, beaten, misjudged, crucified, buried. Hebrews says He endured the cross for the joy set before Him, because He could see past it — resurrection, redemption, eternity. He doesn’t just tell us how to endure. He endured it first, and He walked out of the grave.

So if you’re in something hard right now, this isn’t the end of your story. True joy isn’t the absence of trials. It’s knowing God is with us in the trial, working through the trial, and will bring us through it. That’s everyday faith. That’s faith under pressure.
