Stand a little kid on the edge of the pool and hold your arms out. They look at the water. They look at you. They look at the water again. Then they jump. They have no idea how deep it is. They just know who’s standing in it.
James says that’s what faith looks like. Join us Sunday, October 11 at 11 AM ET as Drew George brings “God Is Faithful” from James 2:14-26, and we share communion together. Can’t make it in the room? Join us online.
💬 “What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him?” (James 2:14). Saying the right words is easy. James wants to see what your faith actually does.
🧥 “Go in peace, be warmed and filled” (v. 16) sounds kind. It doesn’t put a coat on anybody or food on anybody’s table.
⛰️ On the way up the mountain Isaac asked, “Where is the lamb for a burnt offering?” Abraham answered, “God will provide for himself the lamb” (Gen. 22:7-8). He didn’t understand the plan. He trusted the God behind it.
🔥 Years before that, a smoking fire pot and a flaming torch passed between the pieces of a covenant (Gen. 15:17). God bound Himself to His own promise. Abraham’s part was to believe it (Gen. 15:6).
🏠 Rahab “received the messengers and sent them out by another way” (James 2:25). An outsider with a reputation, she hid two strangers on her roof because she believed what she’d heard about Israel’s God (Josh. 2:6-11).
God stopped Abraham’s hand, and Abraham looked up and saw a ram caught in a thicket by its horns (Gen. 22:12-13). Isaac walked down that mountain alive. Centuries later John the Baptist saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29). God did not spare His own Son (Rom. 8:32). Jesus moved toward us when we had nothing to offer Him, and three days later He walked out of the grave.
So this week, take the leap. Drop off the meal. Make the phone call. Sit with the person nobody sits with. Invite the neighbor you’ve been praying for to come with you next Sunday. Faith that’s alive moves toward people. That’s everyday faith.
