Thousands of feet down in the ocean, where sunlight never reaches, the anglerfish hunts with a light. It grows a glowing lure on a spine that hangs in front of its mouth, and it waits. Small fish swim toward the only light they can see. Then the jaws close.
🚫 “Let no one say when he is tempted, ‘I am being tempted by God'” (James 1:13). Trials test our faith. Temptation tries to pull us away from it. God is never the one doing the pulling
🎣 “Each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire” (v. 14). Those are fishing words. The bait looks good because there’s a hook under it
⚠️ Verse 15 gives the progression: desire, then sin, then death. Sin rarely starts with an action. It starts with a want we let take control. The earlier you notice it, the easier it is to step back
☀️ “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change” (v. 17). The sun moves, the moon changes, shadows shift. God’s goodness doesn’t, and there’s no hook behind His light
🌱 “Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth” (v. 18). God didn’t lure us toward destruction. He brought us toward life
Jesus knew temptation. Forty days in the wilderness, and three times Satan offered Him a shortcut. Three times He answered with God’s Word. Where Adam failed in a garden, Jesus stayed faithful in a wilderness. Then He went to the cross for everyone who has given in, and He walked out of the grave to give us new life. Hebrews says we have a high priest who was tempted in every way we are, yet without sin.
So when temptation shows you the bait this week, ask what it’s promising you and what it will actually cost. God is not holding out on you. Every good gift comes from Him. When temptation whispers, let faith answer: “My God is good. His way is better, and I trust Him.” That’s everyday faith.
A hundred years ago, a group of women wanted the kids around them to learn the Bible. It was hard, and they didn’t quit. This Sunday we get to thank God for everything He has built from that.
