⏳ Nobody thinks life is short while they’re living it. When you’re young a year feels like forever — then somewhere along the way the calendar starts turning faster, you look at your kids, then your grandkids, and you catch yourself in the mirror asking when did that happen? Psalm 90 is the oldest prayer in the book, written by Moses — a man who had watched an entire generation die in the wilderness and knew exactly how fast the years go. And here’s the strange thing: he never asks God for more time. He asks for something better.
🏠 “Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations” — Moses doesn’t open with the problem, he opens with God; a people living in tents with no permanent address called Him home
⛰️ “Before the mountains were brought forth… from everlasting to everlasting you are God” — before the earth, before a calendar, before there was a yesterday; we measure our lives in years, God isn’t measured at all
🌾 “In the morning it flourishes and is renewed; in the evening it fades and withers” — it feels permanent while we’re in it, but James calls it a mist that appears for a little while and vanishes
🔦 “You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your presence” — the ache isn’t only that life is brief, it’s that sin runs through it; we can fool people, we cannot fool God
📖 “So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom” — not make my days longer, but make them count; Moses asks God to help him see how valuable a single day really is
So here’s the invitation this week: stop asking for more time and start asking for wisdom with the time you’ve got. Moses ends by praying that God would establish the work of our hands and show His power to our children — a prayer that lands differently as we count down to 100 years of Lakeview. Psalm 90 leaves us with a problem it can’t solve on its own. Jesus answers it: “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live.”
