Moving From Distraction to Devotion: Choosing What Matters Most

distraction

At Lakeview Christian Church, our mission is simple but life-changing: Be the change as Jesus has changed us. We believe that real transformation comes not from religious routine but from a living, abiding relationship with Jesus Christ. That’s why we invite everyone in our community to embrace our “Just 3” discipleship path—Study, Share, and Serve—as a way to grow in faith and put love into action.

The Story of Mary and Martha: An Invitation to Abide

Let’s begin with a story from Luke 10:38-42 that beautifully illustrates this calling. As Jesus and his disciples visited the home of Martha and Mary, two sisters responded to His presence in very different ways. Martha, busy and stressed by all the preparations, found herself distracted—her service, though well-intentioned, became a source of frustration. Mary, meanwhile, “sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said.” When Martha asked Jesus to intervene, He responded,

“Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:41-42, NIV)

This gentle correction from Jesus invites us to pause and consider: Are we simply present in the room, or are we truly present with Him? Are we caught in the cycle of doing, or are we abiding in Christ, letting our relationship with Him shape everything else?

Study: Loving and Knowing God

Our first “Just 3” commitment is to Study—not out of obligation, but to grow in love and knowledge of God. Like Mary, we want to choose “what is better”: time at the feet of Jesus, soaking in His word and presence. The Bible reminds us,

“Remain in me, as I also remain in you…” (John 15:4, NIV)

Studying Scripture isn’t about earning God’s favor but deepening our relationship with Him. When we open our Bibles, attend small groups, or listen to teaching, we’re not just collecting information—we’re seeking transformation, becoming more like Christ.

Share: Knowing and Loving Others

The second step, Share, calls us to move beyond ourselves and into authentic community. At Lakeview Christian Church, we believe that spiritual growth flourishes in relationships. Just as Mary and Martha welcomed Jesus into their home, we open our lives to others—sharing joys, struggles, questions, and hopes.

The Apostle Paul encourages us,

“Therefore encourage one another and build each other up…” (1 Thessalonians 5:11, NIV)

Sharing our journey makes faith real and visible, both within the church and out in the world.

Serve: Love in Action

Finally, Serve is where faith meets action. Martha’s desire to serve was good, but her distraction kept her from the heart of Jesus’ message. When we serve from a place of abiding—rooted in the love of Christ—our actions become expressions of God’s love in the world.

“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace…” (1 Peter 4:10, NIV)

Serving at Lakeview Christian Church means being the hands and feet of Jesus—caring for neighbors, volunteering time, giving generously, and showing compassion to those in need.

Be the Change: Just 3 Steps

Our mission, “Be the change as Jesus has changed us,” comes alive through these simple but profound steps—Study to love and know God, Share to know and love others, and Serve as love in action. Each step is a response to Jesus’ invitation: not to earn His approval, but to dwell in His presence and let His love overflow.

As you walk through your week, ask yourself: Am I making time to sit at Jesus’ feet? Am I sharing my life with others? Am I serving with love? Let’s not settle for being merely present—let’s abide in Christ and be the change our world needs.

If you’re searching for a place to grow, connect, and serve, we invite you to join us at Lakeview Christian Church. Let’s follow Jesus together—one step, one conversation, one act of service at a time.
