Jesus, the Son of Man: Understanding His Divine Authority

man

In the heart of the Gospel of Luke, we encounter a story that transcends time—a story not merely about friendship, faith, or healing, but about the very identity of Jesus Christ. At Lakeview Christian Church of Portage Lakes, we are committed to “Be the change as Jesus has changed us,” and understanding Jesus’ identity is foundational to this mission. This story challenges us to see Jesus not just as a historical figure, but as the living Son of Man with divine authority.

The Title “Son of Man”

The title “Son of Man” is used 88 times in the New Testament, and it carries profound significance. It is deeply rooted in Old Testament prophecy, particularly in Daniel 7:13-14, where the Son of Man is given authority, glory, and sovereign power. This title emphasizes Jesus’ dual nature—He is both fully God and fully human. He experienced the full range of human emotions and needs, yet He also possessed divine authority.

This dual nature is crucial for our understanding of who Jesus is. As fully human, He empathizes with our weaknesses and struggles. Hebrews 4:15 tells us, “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin.” As fully God, He has the power to forgive sins and transform lives.

  • Study: To truly grasp who Jesus is, we must delve into the scriptures. By studying the Gospels, we see Jesus’ humanity and divinity intertwined. Philippians 2:6-8 reminds us of His humility, as He “made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant.” This humility is a model for us, showing that true greatness comes from serving others.
  • Share: As we understand the depth of Jesus’ identity, we are compelled to share this truth with others. Romans 10:14 asks, “How can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard?” Sharing the Gospel is essential to our mission. We are called to be witnesses of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection, proclaiming His authority and love to a world in need.
  • Serve: Jesus’ life was marked by service. He washed the feet of His disciples and healed the sick. We are called to follow His example, serving others with humility and love. This service is not just an act of charity, but a reflection of Jesus’ love and authority in our lives.

Conclusion: Understanding Jesus as the Son of Man is crucial for our faith. It affirms His authority to forgive sins and His role as our Savior. At Lakeview Christian Church, we invite you to join us in studying, sharing, and serving as we live out the transformative power of Jesus in our lives. Let us embrace His authority and allow it to guide our actions and interactions with others. As we do so, we fulfill our mission to “Be the change as Jesus has changed us,” impacting our community and the world with His love and truth.
