Faith, Forgiveness, and the Power of Prayer

faith

At Lakeview Christian Church of Portage Lakes, we are continually inspired by the teachings of Jesus and the transformative power of faith. In Mark 11:23-25, Jesus provides profound insights into the nature of faith, prayer, and forgiveness, which are essential components of our spiritual journey and our mission to “Be the Change as Jesus has changed us.”

Faith: Moving Mountains

In Mark 11:23, Jesus tells His disciples, “Truly, I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them.” This powerful statement emphasizes the importance of unwavering faith. At Lakeview, we encourage our community to cultivate a faith that can move mountains, trusting in God’s power to accomplish the impossible.

Our “Just 3” approach begins with “Study,” where we delve into Scripture to deepen our understanding and love for God. As we study His Word, our faith is strengthened, enabling us to trust in His promises and power. Hebrews 11:1 reminds us, “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.” By nurturing our faith, we can confidently approach God in prayer, believing that He will act according to His will.

Forgiveness: A Clean Slate

Jesus continues in Mark 11:25, “And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.” Forgiveness is a crucial aspect of our relationship with God and others. As we come to the communion table, we are reminded of the importance of starting with a clean slate, forgiving others as we have been forgiven.

At Lakeview, we emphasize the importance of “Share” in our mission, which involves knowing and loving others. Forgiveness is a vital part of this process, as it allows us to release grudges and embrace the grace that God has extended to us. Colossians 3:13 encourages us to “bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” By practicing forgiveness, we reflect Christ’s love and create a community of grace and reconciliation.

Prayer: Trusting in God’s Bigness

In Mark 11:24, Jesus assures us, “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” This promise highlights the power of prayer and the importance of trusting in God’s ability to work in our lives. At Lakeview, we encourage our community to pray with confidence, trusting in the “bigness” of God to answer our prayers in His perfect timing and way.

Our mission to “Serve” as love in action is rooted in the belief that God hears and responds to our prayers. Philippians 4:6-7 reminds us, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” By approaching God with faith and gratitude, we can experience His peace and witness His transformative work in our lives and communities.

In conclusion, Mark 11:23-25 challenges us to embrace a faith that moves mountains, practice forgiveness, and trust in the power of prayer. At Lakeview Christian Church, we are committed to living out these principles as we “Be the Change” through studying, sharing, and serving. Let us continue to grow in faith, extend forgiveness, and pray with confidence, trusting in God’s ability to do immeasurably more than we can ask or imagine (Ephesians 3:20).
