Our Hearts Are Restless Until They Rest in God
If you’re not filling your heart and soul with God, what are you filling it with? This penetrating question challenges every believer at Lakeview Christian Church of Portage Lakes as we pursue our mission to be the change as Jesus has changed us.
The truth is simple yet profound: we all thirst for something.
The Empty Pursuits That Never Satisfy
People in today’s society desperately try to satisfy their souls with countless substitutes. Entertainment promises escape. Success promises validation. Relationships promise completeness. Possessions promise happiness. Money promises security. Alcohol and drugs promise relief. The list goes on and on, yet none of these actually deliver what our souls truly need.
Augustine famously wrote words that echo through centuries: “Our hearts are restless until they rest in you.” This ancient wisdom speaks directly to our modern emptiness. Are our lives truly resting in God? Because nothing satisfies the soul except the One who created it.
The Solution: Consistent Time in God’s Word
At Lakeview Christian Church, our “Just 3” commitment begins with Study—to love and know God through His Word. This isn’t about checking a religious box or fulfilling an obligation. Reading God’s Word is crucial for genuine spiritual satisfaction, and it needs to happen consistently—not just once in a while, not just once a week in Sunday school or Wednesday night Bible study, but as many times a week as you can.
Research reveals something remarkable: reading Scripture four times a week radically changes your life. This is a documented fact. Four times weekly or more changes you positively, both behaviorally and mentally. Three times shows minimal effect, but that fourth time creates a threshold of transformation.
Living Out “Just 3” at Lakeview Christian Church
Our mission to be the change involves three commitments:
Study – Love and know God through consistent engagement with Scripture Share – Know and love others by sharing the satisfaction you’ve found Serve – Love in action, serving from a satisfied soul rather than empty obligation
When we fill our souls with God through His Word, everything changes. We discover that the restlessness Augustine described finds its answer in intimate relationship with our Creator.
Take the Four-Day Challenge
This week, commit to reading God’s Word four times. Not long sessions—even 10-15 minutes counts. Watch how this consistent engagement begins to satisfy the deeper thirst you’ve been trying to fill with lesser things.
Nothing in this world can satisfy your soul except God Himself. Stop chasing substitutes and come to the true source of living water. Your heart will finally find the rest it’s been seeking.
Join us at Lakeview Christian Church as we pursue lives satisfied in Christ, studying His Word together and experiencing the transformation that comes from resting in Him alone.
