One of Satan’s greatest strategies is deceptively simple: make your problems appear enormous and make God seem tiny.

When you’re in the middle of a crisis – financial stress, relationship breakdown, health concerns, job loss – those problems can loom so large that they block out everything else. They consume your thoughts, dominate your conversations, and steal your peace. Meanwhile, God feels distant, small, maybe even irrelevant to what you’re facing.

At Lakeview Christian Church, we’ve discovered a powerful truth: worship reverses this distorted perspective. Our mission to be the change as Jesus has changed us begins when we understand how worship transforms the way we see both God and our circumstances.

The Unchanging Character of God

Here’s a foundation we must build on: even when circumstances change, even when life throws terrible things at us, the character of God doesn’t change.

Hebrews 13:8 reminds us, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” Your bank account might change. Your health status might change. Your relationships might change. Your job security might change. But God’s faithfulness, love, power, and presence remain absolutely constant.

This is why worship isn’t just something we do when we feel good. Worship is a weapon we wield when circumstances try to convince us that God has somehow changed or shrunk.

Worship Works Like a Telescope

Think about how a telescope works. When you look at the stars with your naked eye, they appear as tiny points of light. But when you look through a telescope, suddenly you can see their true size and majesty. The telescope doesn’t make the stars bigger – they were already massive. It simply helps you see how great they truly are.

That’s exactly what worship does.

When we worship God, we don’t make Him any greater than He already is. Instead, worship changes our perspective. It helps us see the greatness of God more clearly. It magnifies Him in our hearts and minds until He fills our field of vision.

The Closer You Get Through Worship

Many believers can testify to this truth: when worshiping God, we never feel closer to Him than in that moment. There’s something about genuine praise that creates intimacy with God.

Maybe you’ve experienced this. You’re singing a worship song, and suddenly the presence of God feels tangible. Or you’re in private prayer, thanking God for His goodness, and peace washes over you. Or you’re reading Scripture that exalts God’s character, and your heart swells with love for Him.

This is why the Study component of our “Just 3” at Lakeview includes worship. When we study to love and know God, we’re not just learning facts – we’re encountering the living God in ways that transform us.

When You Worship, Circumstances Shrink

Here’s what happens when we continually praise God: our circumstances shrink into their proper perspective.

That mountain of debt is still there, but it’s no longer bigger than God’s provision. That health diagnosis is still real, but it’s no longer more powerful than God’s healing and sustaining grace. That broken relationship still hurts, but it’s no longer beyond God’s ability to restore or give you peace.

Worship doesn’t deny reality – it puts reality in proper context. It reminds you that your God is bigger than your biggest problem.

Trust God Because He Hears and Delivers

The Psalms teach us repeatedly that we should trust God because He hears and He delivers. This isn’t wishful thinking – it’s based on God’s proven track record throughout history and in our own lives.

When we worship, we’re rehearsing God’s faithfulness. We’re reminding ourselves of times He’s come through before. We’re declaring truth over our emotions. We’re choosing faith over fear.

This is the Share aspect of our mission – when we know and love others, we invite them to worship with us. We don’t suffer alone. We don’t fight battles alone. We gather together to magnify the Lord.

Practical Ways to Worship When Life is Hard

1. Start with gratitude. List three things God has done, even if they seem small. Thanksgiving opens the door to worship.

2. Sing truth over your situation. Play worship music that exalts God’s character – His faithfulness, power, and love.

3. Pray Scripture back to God. Use Psalms to express both your pain and your trust.

4. Gather with believers. Don’t skip church when life gets hard. Corporate worship magnifies God powerfully.

5. Serve others. The Serve component of our mission – love in action – is itself an act of worship that shifts your focus.

So How’s Your Worship?

Ask yourself honestly: How’s your worship lately?

Are you only praising God when things go well? Are you allowing your problems to dominate your perspective? Have you made your circumstances bigger than your God?

Or are you choosing to worship even when you don’t feel like it? Are you magnifying the Lord until your problems shrink to their proper size? Are you drawing near to God through praise?
