Finding Refuge in Jesus – The Only Safe Place from Sin

Our Greatest Danger Wasn’t What We Thought

When we read the story of David in the Old Testament, we see him facing terrifying enemies. King Saul hunted him relentlessly. Goliath the giant threatened to destroy Israel. The Philistines surrounded him with deadly intent.

But here’s a truth that changes everything: our greatest danger wasn’t Saul, wasn’t Goliath, wasn’t the Philistines – it was sin.

At Lakeview Christian Church, we live out our mission to be the change as Jesus has changed us. This transformation begins when we understand what Jesus accomplished on the cross and why we desperately need Him.

The Sinless Savior Who Suffered for Us

Unlike David, Jesus never sinned. Unlike David, Jesus never deceived anyone. Unlike David, Jesus perfectly trusted in God, and yet He suffered infinitely more than any Old Testament saint ever did.

Why? Because on the cross, Jesus took the judgment that we deserved.

Every lie we’ve told, every hateful thought we’ve harbored, every selfish action we’ve committed, every person we’ve hurt – Jesus took the punishment for all of it. Isaiah 53:5 says, “He was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace.”

Through His resurrection, Jesus secured our eternal deliverance. He didn’t just temporarily fix our sin problem – He solved it permanently and completely.

The Most Beautiful Summary of the Gospel

Psalm 34:22 gives us one of the most beautiful summaries of the gospel in all of Scripture: “The Lord redeems the life of his servants; none of those who take refuge in him will be condemned.”

Read that with Jesus in mind. When we take refuge in Christ, condemnation is completely removed.

The Apostle Paul understood this deeply. In Romans 8:1, he declares, “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” No condemnation. Not reduced condemnation. Not conditional forgiveness. Complete, total freedom from judgment.

Refuge is a Person, Not a Place

Here’s something crucial to understand: refuge isn’t merely a place. Our refuge as Christians is a person, and His name is Jesus.

During violent storms, people run to shelters for safety. The shelter doesn’t stop the storm, but it protects those inside from harm. Jesus works the same way in our lives. When we believe in Him and know who He is, we are protected, secure, and eternally safe – no matter what storms rage around us.

This is why the Study component of our “Just 3” at Lakeview is so important. When we study to love and know God, we discover the incredible security we have in Christ.

What Taking Refuge in Jesus Means

1. Complete forgiveness. Every sin – past, present, and future – is covered by Christ’s blood (1 John 1:9).

2. New identity. You’re no longer defined by your worst moments but by Christ’s righteousness (2 Corinthians 5:17).

3. Eternal security. Nothing can separate you from God’s love (Romans 8:38-39).

4. Access to God. You can approach God’s throne with confidence (Hebrews 4:16).

5. Purpose and mission. You’re called to Share this good news and Serve others in love.

Have You Taken Refuge?

The question isn’t whether you’re good enough, smart enough, or spiritual enough. The question is simple: Have you taken refuge in Jesus?

If you’ve never surrendered your life to Christ, today is your opportunity. Admit you’re asinner who needs saving. Believe that Jesus died for your sins and rose from the dead. Confess Him as Lord of your life. That’s how you take refuge in the only safe place that exists.

If you already know Jesus, are you living like someone who has no condemnation? Or are you still carrying guilt and shame that Jesus already paid for? Romans 8:1 isn’t just a nice verse – it’s your reality in Christ.

The Safety That Never Fails

At Lakeview Christian Church, we’ve witnessed countless lives transformed by the refuge found in Jesus. People who were drowning in addiction, broken by past mistakes, crushed by guilt – they’ve discovered that Jesus provides a safety and security that nothing else in this world can offer.

This is the heart of our mission to be the change as Jesus has changed us. We’ve experienced His refuge personally, and now we’re called to Share this hope with others and Serve them in love.

Don’t wait for the storm to hit before you seek shelter. Take refuge in Jesus today. He’s already paid the price. He’s already conquered sin and death. He’s already prepared a place of safety for you.

The Lord redeems the life of His servants; none of those who take refuge in Him will be condemned. That’s not just a promise – it’s the gospel truth that changes everything.
