Mid-Week Devotional: Abiding in the True Vine

Scripture Reading: John 15:1-17, Hosea 10:1, Psalm 80:7-9 Jeremiah 2:21

Introduction:

John 15, delves into the profound metaphor of the vine and the branches, exploring God’s incredible plan for humanity and our need to abide in Christ. As we reflect on this passage, let’s consider how God’s design for our lives leads to true fulfillment and purpose.

Understanding:

  1. God’s Sovereign Plan: Like a skilled author, God intricately weaves together the threads of our lives to fulfill His divine purpose. The imagery of the vineyard in Hosea 10:1 and Psalm 80:7-9 illustrates God’s cultivation of His chosen people, Israel, and His desire for them to bear fruit.
  2. The Need for Connection: Drew emphasizes the vital importance of remaining connected to Jesus, the true vine. Just as branches draw nourishment from the vine, so we derive our strength and vitality from our union with Christ. Apart from Him, we can do nothing (John 15:5).
  3. Walking in the Spirit: Drew highlights the role of the Holy Spirit in fostering unity with God and with one another. Through prayer, we cultivate a deepening relationship with Christ, allowing His life to flow through us and bear fruit in our lives.

There is a story of a 6-year-old boy at the park, who found a new friend at the playground around his age named Tommy. The Little Boy wanted to go with Tommy when he left the park because he now liked Tommy a lot they were best friends after 10 minutes. So the 6-year-old comes up to Mom and Dad and says, “Mom, Dad can I go I’m going to go with Tommy.” And Mom and Dad Are like “whoa whoa whoa whoa who’s Tommy where’s Tommy going where’s Tommy live how far are you going who’s going to be with you?” “Well I don’t know but I know Tommy so I am going”

This is what walking with the spirit ought to be like well who you going with the spirit where’s he taking you to Jesus well what do you need I don’t know who’s coming with you I don’t know but I’m going with the spirit and we’re walking and this is what the Christian walks should be like it should be that exciting I’m going with Tommy I’m going with the spirit wherever he’s going to take me because I know where he’s taking me is to the father and I know that I cannot get there any other way”

Reflection:

Consider the following questions:

  • How does the imagery of the ture vine and the branches deepen your understanding of your relationship with Christ?
  • In what ways do you rely on your own strength (living to the old vine) rather than abiding in Jesus (The true Vine)?
  • How can you cultivate a closer walk with the Spirit in your daily life?

Application:

Reflect on the following questions:

  • What is standing in your way of praying more? Do you not see its Value? Do you think you’re too Busy? Do you think it is ineffective?
  • How can you prioritize prayer in your relationship with God?
  • Do you really believe Jesus has done all of the work or are you trying to bear fruit on your own? In what areas of your life do you need to surrender control and allow the Spirit to lead?

Prayer Time:

We encourage you to pray on your own for 5-10 min here is something to help if you need it.

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the gift of Your Son, Jesus Christ, who is the true vine in whom we find life and purpose. Help us to abide in Him daily, drawing strength and nourishment from our union with Him. Fill us afresh with Your Holy Spirit, empowering us to live lives that honor and glorify You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
