Journey to the Cross – Week 9

Journey to the Cross

Day 1: Jesus Meets Us in Our Mess

Scripture: Luke 24:36-37 “As they were talking about these things, Jesus himself stood among them, and said to them, ‘Peace to you!’ But they were startled and frightened and thought they saw a spirit.”

Reflection:

The disciples weren’t sitting in perfect faith when Jesus appeared. They were confused, talking through their questions, trying to make sense of what had happened. Their theology wasn’t straight. Their doubts were real. And right in the middle of that mess—without waiting for them to figure it all out—Jesus showed up.

This is how Jesus works. He doesn’t wait for you to calm down, get your act together, or have all your questions answered. He steps into the room anyway. He’s not intimidated by your fear, your confusion, or your doubt.

Maybe today you’re behind locked doors—physically, emotionally, or spiritually. Maybe fear is whispering, “What if this doesn’t work out?” Jesus meets you right there. Not after you’ve figured everything out, but right in the middle of your talking, your questioning, your uncertainty.

Prayer:

Jesus, thank You that You don’t wait for me to have it all together. Meet me in my mess today. Help me to recognize Your presence even when I’m confused and afraid. Bring Your peace into the locked rooms of my heart. Amen.

Reflection Question:

What “locked room” in your life do you need Jesus to enter today?

Day 2: Peace Is a Person, Not a Circumstance

Scripture: John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”

Reflection:

In the ancient world, peace was tied to circumstances—no war, no conflict, everything going smoothly. Rome even enforced what they called the Pax Romana—peace by force and control. But Jesus offers something completely different.

His peace isn’t about controlling your circumstances or avoiding difficult situations. It’s about presence. When someone you trust walks into the room and says, “I’m here,” everything changes—not because the problem disappeared, but because you’re no longer alone.

Real peace isn’t found in having all the answers. The disciples thought they needed explanations, but what they actually needed was Jesus. You can be in the middle of a storm—locked in confusion, facing impossible situations—and still experience peace when you allow Christ to be present in your life.

Think about a child who’s crying uncontrollably. A binky, a hug, a favorite stuffed animal—what do all these have in common? Presence. Something comforting that says, “You’re not alone.” That’s what Jesus offers you today.

Prayer:

Lord, help me to stop seeking peace in my circumstances and start finding it in Your presence. Teach me that peace isn’t about everything being okay—it’s about You being with me. Calm my troubled heart with the reality of who You are. Amen.

Reflection Question:

Where have you been seeking peace in circumstances instead of in Christ’s presence?

Day 3: Faith Grounded in Reality

Scripture: Luke 24:39-40 “See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself. Touch me, and see. For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.”

Reflection:

Jesus didn’t just show up—He proved He was real. “Touch me. See my hands. Look at my feet.” He invited investigation because faith isn’t blind; it’s anchored in truth. The resurrection really happened—not just spiritually, but physically and bodily.

This is one of the most important moments in all of Scripture. Jesus is demonstrating that Christianity isn’t based on feelings, visions, or spiritual ideas. It’s rooted in real-life events. He defeated death. He overcame the grave. He transformed into His resurrected, heavenly form. And these men and women saw it with their own eyes.

Why does this matter? Because when doubts arise—and they will—you can anchor your faith in what actually happened in history. The early disciples wouldn’t have invented a bodily resurrection; it went against everything their culture believed. But they testified to it anyway because they witnessed it.

Your faith grows stronger when it’s grounded in truth. You don’t have to manufacture feelings or pretend everything makes sense. Jesus invites you to examine, to ask questions, to investigate—because He can handle your doubts.

Prayer:

Jesus, thank You that my faith isn’t built on wishful thinking but on the reality of Your resurrection. When doubts arise, anchor me in the truth of what You accomplished. Help me to see that You really did defeat death—and that changes everything. Amen.

Reflection Question:

What doubts do you need to bring to Jesus for Him to address with truth?

Day 4: Opened Minds, Transformed Hearts

Scripture: Luke 24:45 “Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures.”

Reflection:

Understanding Scripture isn’t just about intelligence or knowing facts. It’s about illumination—seeing the Word come alive in your heart. Jesus didn’t just explain the Bible to the disciples; He opened their minds to understand it.

When Scripture becomes alive to you—when you read about David and feel his heart after God, when you see Ruth’s faithfulness and it stirs something in your soul, when the story of Jesus connects to your own story—that’s illumination. That’s when the Word moves from your head to your heart and transforms how you live.

Jesus connected the dots for the disciples. He walked them through the Law of Moses, the Prophets, the Psalms—showing them how everything pointed to Him. And suddenly, what had been confusing became clear. What had seemed impossible became the only thing that made sense.

This is available to you today. When you center your life on Christ, things start to make sense. Repentance isn’t losing your life—it’s finding it. Forgiveness isn’t earned—it’s received. Salvation isn’t something you achieve—it’s a promise you accept. And when that truth lights up in your heart, everything changes.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit, open my mind to understand the Scriptures. Don’t let me just read words on a page—help me to encounter the living God through Your Word. Illuminate my heart so that truth transforms how I live. Amen.

Reflection Question:

When was the last time Scripture came alive to you in a way that changed something in your life?

Day 5: You Are a Witness

Scripture: Luke 24:48; Acts 1:8 “You are witnesses of these things… But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

Reflection:

After three and a half years with Jesus—watching, listening, suffering alongside Him, witnessing His death and resurrection—the disciples finally understood. And now Jesus gives them a purpose: “You are witnesses.”

Not scholars. Not perfect people. Ordinary men and women who would testify about what they had seen and how their lives had been changed. That’s your calling too.

Sharing your faith can feel intimidating. But you don’t have to have all the answers. You just need to tell people what Jesus has done for you and how He’s changed your life. No one else can tell your story the way you can.

And here’s the best part: you’re not alone. Jesus promised the Holy Spirit—power to be His witnesses. The disciples had to wait. You don’t. The Spirit has already come. He’s already living and working inside of you, giving you the boldness you need.

Your mission isn’t just to reach your neighborhood—it’s to impact the world. Start with the neighbor next door, go across the street, down the road, and beyond. You are called to flip the light switch on in people’s lives, to help them see the message of Jesus.

Prayer:

Jesus, thank You for making me a witness. Help me not to hide what You’ve done in my life. Give me boldness through Your Spirit to share Your truth with the people around me—starting today. Use my story to point others to You. Amen.

Reflection Question:

Who is one person God is calling you to share your story with this week?

Closing Thought:

You are not a slave to fear anymore. You are a son or daughter of the Most High. The price has been paid in full. So come as you are—fear, anxiety, and all—and cast it on Him who can take it. Jesus has overcome the world, and His Spirit lives in you. Walk in the boldness and peace that comes from His presence.
