The True Cost of Freedom

Current Sermon Series: Proverbs - The Way of Wisdom

The Price Paid For You

In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to overlook the freedoms we enjoy daily. We often just take them for granted, forgetting the immense sacrifices that have been made to secure them. Whether it’s the freedom to speak our minds, practice our faith, or simply live without fear, on this Independence Day 2024, we can be thankful for our liberties that have been paid for with a great price. As we take a few moments to reflect on these freedoms, it’s crucial to remember that freedom isn’t free—it never has been. And the sacrifice Jesus gave on the cross is the ultimate price paid to set humanity free.

The Sacrifice For Freedom

Throughout history, the desire for freedom has been marked by struggle and sacrifice. In times of war, countless men and women have laid down their lives to protect the liberties we hold dear. Their bravery and selflessness have ensured that we can live in a society where freedom is a fundamental right, not a privilege.

Even in times of peace, the fight for freedom continues on a personal level. It manifests in different forms, such as the battle against addiction, the struggle to overcome fear, and the journey to break free from our past. These internal wars are just as significant as the external ones, as they shape our ability to live fully and authentically.

The Chains That Bind Us

In our society today, so many people find themselves in a state of captivity, bound by invisible chains. Addiction, fear, and past traumas can hold us back, preventing us from experiencing true freedom and full potential. These struggles are real and pervasive, affecting individuals from all walks of life.

Addiction, whether to substances, behaviors, or even negative thought patterns, can be a powerful force that keeps us trapped. It robs us of our autonomy and can lead to a cycle of despair and hopelessness. Similarly, fear can be a paralyzing force, stopping us from pursuing our dreams and living our lives to the fullest. Our past, with its mistakes and regrets, can also be a heavy burden, weighing us down and preventing us from moving forward.

The Grace of Our Savior

But there is hope! Through the grace of our Savior, Jesus Christ, we can be set free in the greatest and most profound way! John 8:36 boldly states “So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” This freedom is not just a temporary reprieve from our struggles; it is a complete and total liberation. Pastor Jim on Sunday said, “When I say we are wholly free, I mean W-H-O-L-L-Y—completely and entirely free. And when I say we are holy free, I mean H-O-L-Y—set apart and sanctified by God’s grace.”

Jesus Christ’s sacrifice on the cross paid the ultimate price for our freedom. His love and grace offer us a way out of our captivity, a path to true liberty. Through Him, we can break free from the chains of addiction, overcome our fears, and leave our past behind. We are given a fresh start, a new beginning, and the promise of eternal life. Romans 8:1-2 says: “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.”

Embracing Our Freedom in Christ

Understanding the tremendous sacrifice given whether for our country, but especially pertaining to our faith, should inspire us to live differently. It should encourage us to appreciate the liberties we have and to use them wisely. It should also motivate us to help others find their own freedom, whether through acts of kindness, support, or sharing the message of Christ’s love.

Living free means embracing the life that God has planned for us. It means stepping out in faith, even when it’s difficult, and trusting that God will guide us. It means letting go of the things that hold us back and embracing the new life that Christ offers.

Thoughts to Reflect On

As we reflect on the these benefits we enjoy as a country or in our faith, let’s not take them lightly. Always remember the sacrifice that has been made and the grace that has been given because of Jesus. Let’s strive to live in a way that honors those sacrifices and reflects the love of Christ.

If you find yourself struggling with addiction, fear, or your past, know that you are not alone. Reach out for help, whether through a trusted friend, a support group, or your faith community. Remember that through Christ, you can break free. Galatians 5:1 “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.”

Being free is a precious gift that has been paid for with a great price. Whether it relates to our society or our faith in Christ, it’s important to understand and appreciate its incredible value. In 2 Corinthians 3:17 the apostle Paul declares, “Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” Let’s live in a way that reflects our gratitude for this gift and helps others find their own path to freedom. Through the grace of our Savior, we are wholly and holy set free. That is clearly worth celebrating.
