Faithfulness in the Waiting: Lessons from Zechariah and Elizabeth

faithful

At Lakeview Christian Church of Portage Lakes, we are committed to being the change as Jesus has changed us. Our mission is encapsulated in “Just 3”: Study, Share, Serve. We study to love and know God, share to know and love others, and serve as love in action. This mission is beautifully illustrated in the story of Zechariah and Elizabeth, a narrative that teaches us about faithfulness in the waiting.

Zechariah and Elizabeth’s story, as recounted in Luke 1:5-25, is a testament to the power of patience and faith. Despite their advanced years and Elizabeth’s barrenness, they remained faithful to God. They continued to serve Him, walking blamelessly in all His commandments and statutes. Their hope of having a child seemed gone, yet they did not waver in their devotion.

This story reminds us that faithfulness is not about receiving immediate rewards or answers. It is about trusting God even when we don’t see the outcome. Hebrews 11:1 defines faith as “the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” Zechariah and Elizabeth exemplified this faith, continuing to walk in righteousness despite their unfulfilled desires.

At Lakeview Christian Church, we encourage our community to embody this kind of faithfulness. In our “Study” initiative, we delve into God’s Word to understand His promises and His timing. We learn from stories like Zechariah and Elizabeth’s that God’s timing is perfect, even when it seems delayed. As we study, we grow in our love and knowledge of God, equipping ourselves to trust Him in all circumstances.

Our “Share” initiative calls us to love others as we have been loved. Zechariah and Elizabeth’s story is one we can share to encourage those around us who are in seasons of waiting. By sharing their story, we remind others that God honors faithfulness and that His promises are sure. Romans 8:28 assures us that “in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

Finally, our “Serve” initiative is about putting love into action. Just as Zechariah and Elizabeth served God faithfully, we are called to serve others, even in the mundane moments of life. Galatians 6:9 encourages us, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”

In conclusion, the story of Zechariah and Elizabeth is a powerful reminder of the beauty of faithfulness. At Lakeview Christian Church, we strive to live out this faithfulness through our mission of “Just 3.” As we study, share, and serve, we trust that God will honor our faithfulness, just as He did for Zechariah and Elizabeth. Let us continue to walk in faith, knowing that God’s timing is perfect and His promises are true.
