Embracing Faith Beyond Sight: Lessons from Thomas

thomas

At Lakeview Christian Church of Portage Lakes, we are committed to our mission: “Be the change as Jesus has changed us.” This mission is lived out through our “Just 3” approach: Study, Share, and Serve. Today, we delve into a powerful lesson from the life of Thomas, often known as “Doubting Thomas,” and explore how his journey can inspire us to deepen our faith and trust in God.

Study: Learning from Thomas’s Encounter with Jesus

In John 20:27-29, we find the story of Thomas, who initially doubted the resurrection of Jesus. Jesus invited Thomas to touch His wounds, saying, “Do not disbelieve, but believe.” Thomas’s response, “My Lord and my God,” marks a profound moment of faith. Jesus then said, “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” This passage reminds us that faith is not solely based on physical evidence but on trust in God’s promises. At Lakeview, we encourage studying Scripture to understand the depth of God’s love and the assurance of His presence, even when we cannot see Him.

Share: Building a Community of Faith and Trust

Thomas’s story teaches us the importance of community in our faith journey. Despite his doubts, Thomas remained with the other disciples, and it was within this community that he encountered the risen Christ. At Lakeview, we strive to create a supportive environment where individuals can share their doubts and questions without fear of judgment. As Hebrews 10:24-25 encourages, “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another.” By sharing our experiences, we can strengthen each other’s faith and grow together in our relationship with God.

Serve: Demonstrating Faith Through Action

Our mission to “serve love in action” is inspired by Jesus’s example of grace and compassion. Just as Jesus met Thomas in his doubt, we are called to serve others with understanding and love. In Galatians 5:13, we are reminded, “Serve one another humbly in love.” At Lakeview, we believe that serving others is a tangible expression of our faith. Through various outreach programs and service opportunities, we aim to make a positive impact in our community, demonstrating the love of Christ to those around us.

Conclusion: Trusting God Beyond Our Doubts

Thomas’s journey from doubt to faith is a powerful reminder that God is bigger than our uncertainties. At Lakeview Christian Church of Portage Lakes, we are committed to being the change as Jesus has changed us. By studying God’s Word, sharing our experiences, and serving others, we can deepen our faith and trust in God’s plan. As we navigate the challenges of life, let us remember Jesus’s words: “Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
