The Sovereignty of Christ Over Creation

creation

At Lakeview Christian Church of Portage Lakes, we are continually reminded of the profound truth that Jesus is Lord over all creation. This truth is foundational to our mission to “Be the change as Jesus has changed us.” Understanding Jesus’ sovereignty is not just a theological concept but a transformative reality that impacts every aspect of our lives.

The God of Order and Rest

The sermon highlights how the God of the universe wove into life the need for rest and worship. This divine order is beautifully illustrated in the creation narrative, where God rested on the seventh day (Genesis 2:2-3). This rest was not due to exhaustion but was a divine pause to reflect on the goodness of creation. It sets a pattern for humanity to follow—a rhythm of work and rest that honors God.

Hebrews 1:10 affirms, “You, Lord, laid the foundations of the earth in the beginning, and the heavens are the work of your hands.” This scripture underscores the sovereignty of Christ over all creation. It reminds us that everything we see and experience is under His authority and care. The seventh day, a symbol of rest and completion, points to Jesus’ ultimate rule and His invitation for us to enter into His rest.

Jesus: Lord of the Sabbath and All

Jesus’ declaration as Lord of the Sabbath (Luke 6:5) signifies His authority over all things. This statement was revolutionary, especially in a culture that held the Sabbath in high regard. By claiming lordship over the Sabbath, Jesus was asserting His divine authority and redefining what it means to truly rest in God.

Understanding Jesus as sovereign means recognizing His lordship in every aspect of our lives, from our daily decisions to our spiritual journeys. It means acknowledging that He is in control, even when life feels chaotic. It means trusting that His plans are greater than our own and that His timing is perfect.

Application: Study, Share, Serve

  • Study: Dive into scriptures that reveal Jesus’ authority and sovereignty, such as Colossians 1:16-17, which states, “For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.”
  • Share: Share the message of Jesus’ lordship with others, encouraging them to find peace and order in Him. Testify to how recognizing His sovereignty has brought clarity and purpose to your life.
  • Serve: Serve by living out the values of Christ’s kingdom, demonstrating His love and authority in practical ways. This could be through acts of kindness, community service, or simply being a source of encouragement to those around you.

Conclusion

As we embrace Jesus’ sovereignty, we align our lives with His divine order, fulfilling our mission to “Be the change.” Let us continually seek to understand and live under His lordship, trusting that He is working all things for our good and His glory.
